Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Montague Summers [Rev.]. Essays in Petto. Lon: The Fortune Press, no date (1928), xii, 183 pp. *** "It sometimes happens at a consistory that the Holy Father, after creating certain cardinals, adds that he has nominated one or more additional cardinals, whom he reserves in petto, and whom he will make known later . . ." In this volume Montague includes two previously unknown essays (in petto) written some years before. Please look at the picture of the Contents for a list of the essays. Summers was a scholar who became an authority on 17th. century English drama, various aspects of the occult - Satanism, vampires, werewolves, witchcraft, demons, spiritualism, etc.,and Gothic romance literature. He has the distinction of doing the first English translation of Malleus Maleficarum, an infamous book on witchcraft. The occult became popular with writers and the general public in the early 20th. century which probably encouraged Summers to pursue his studies. The essays in this volume are wide ranging and definitely scholarly in nature. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Bound in brown paper boards and a yellow cloth spine with gilt lettering. The covers are clean with very light wear, with one small, shallow dent on left side at top of front cover. The contents are clean and complete in a good binding. VG+ condition. *** 9 inches tall by 6.5 inches.

Binding tight and firm. No previous owner bookplates/inscriptions. 1929 1st Edition , THE VAMPIRE IN EUROPE By Rev Montague Summers Author Bio: Augustus Montague Summers (10 April 1880 - 10 August 1948) was an English author, clergyman, and teacher. He initially prepared for a career in the Church of England at Oxford and Lichfield, and was ordained as an Anglican deacon in 1908. He then converted to Roman Catholicism and began styling himself as a Catholic priest. He was, however, never affiliated with any Catholic diocese or religious order, and it is doubtful that he was ever actually ordained to the priesthood. He was employed as a teacher of English and Latin while independently pursuing scholarly work on the English drama of the 17th century. The latter earned him election to the Royal Society of Literature in 1916. Noted for his eccentric personality and interests, Summers became a well known figure in London society as a result of the publication of his History of Witchcraft and Demonology in 1926. That work was followed by other studies on witchcraft, vampires, and werewolves, in all of which he professed to believe. Summers also produced a modern English translation, published in 1929, of the 15th-century witch hunter's manual, the Malleus Maleficarum. He has been characterized as "arguably the most seminal twentieth century purveyor of pop culture occultism." Synopsis: Renowned occultist and clergyman Montague Summers explores the realm of Vampires and stunning monsters. He comes up with some very shocking possibilities as well as "true tales" of terror from England, Ireland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, et al. He has been characterized as "arguably the most seminal twentieth century purveyor of pop culture occultism." Synopsis: Vividly detailed and highly readable, this classic history of witchcraft and demonology provides a thorough exploration of sorcery, Satanism, and every variety of the black arts. Reflecting popular folklore and theological opinions of the late medieval and early Renaissance periods, this survey of necromancy traces witchcraft from ancient times to the twentieth century, describing the link between heresy and the occult. Threaded with dramatic accounts of witch trials and devil's pacts, this time-tested reference offers a compelling look at The Worship of the Witch, Demons and Familiars, the Sabbat, and Diabolic Possession and Modern Spiritism. It also offers fascinating insight into the role of the Witch in Dramatic Literature. A prolific occult historian, Montague Summers wrote numerous books, and he edited and translated such important early demonology and witchcraft texts as the Malleus Maleficarum. An intriguing perspective on the development of the black arts and their heretical interpretations by society, church, and state, The History of Witchcraft and Demonology will capture the attention of the general reader as well as the occult enthusiast. He was considered an expert on exorcism and wrote of the effects (during exorcisms) of various plants and other substances[1] including cubeb, cardamom, ginger and nutmeg. He was also considered an expert on demonology, [2] sins relating to sexuality, and all combinations thereof, including investigations of those individuals accused of sexual relations with demons.
