Born in Argentina in 1957, Gerardo Suter has lived in Mexico since 1970. Largely self-taught as an artist, he emerged as one of Latin America's most original voices in the early 1980's. Suter has become an influential figure for his move away from documentary photography towards a more expressive art that now includes innovative combinations of photographic images with video, installation, and performance. "His work explores themes of memory, nostalgia, and the persistence of the past in mysterious scenes of pre-Columbian architectural remains. These startling and compelling images seem to suggest the simultaneously fearful and tantalizingly sensual immediacy of Latin America's pre-Hispanic inheritance.
