Renoir's adaptation, not nearly as bleak as Gorky's play, maintains a warm humanity, but in the case of Kurosawa, the setting is changed to Edo period Japan, and the story remains faithfully grim. Set in Russia, shot on location in France. 9 x 11.75 inches. Very Good plus, light edgewear, creases and pinholes at corners. Scorsese, My Voyage to Italy. Criterion Collection 239.
