Februar 1962 in Prag) war ein tschechischer Maler und Grafiker. Max ¦vabinský wurde am 17. September 1873 in Kromerí geboren. Zusammen mit Jan Preisler, Antonín Slavícek und Milo Jiránek war er einer der Begründer der modernen tschechischen Kunst. ¦vabinský und seine Frau Ela weilten zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts oft zusammen mit der Familie Vejrych in Kozlov nahe Ceská Trebová. Dort wurde er zu vielen seiner Landschaftsbilder inspiriert. Zu dieser Zeit malte er einige seiner berühmtesten Werke, wie zum Beispiel Arme Gegend. Aufgrund der hohen Qualität seines graphischen Werkes wurde er 1910 zum Professor an der Prager Kunstakademie berufen. Er entwarf auch viele tschechoslowakische Briefmarken, darunter auch die sehr häufigen Dauermarken mit dem Porträt des Staatspräsidenten Tomá Garrigue Masaryk. 1945 erhielt er den Ehrentitel Nationalkünstler und dazu das Recht, ein Atelier in der Prager Kunstakademie auf Lebenszeit zu nutzen. Er starb am 10. Februar 1962 in Prag. cs Gewicht in Gramm: 1200.

Title pages and list of plates in Czech, no text. Contains 30 hand tipped plates on thick black paper stock with deco tissue guards. An excellent, near fine copy of this potentially fragile volume. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Nicely inked presentation inscription to Laurence Steinhardt (United States Ambassador to Czechoslovakia) on the half title page on the occasion of his visit to the city of Hradec Králové on April 15 1946. Several signatures below along with what is no doubt the city seal. Additionally signed by the 2 authors (Kubicek and Wirth) on the colophon page. The book is notable for containing seven early photomechanical images by Josef Sudek (most dated 1931 in the caption) and a portrait engraving as a frontispiece by Max Svabinsky (a well known Czech artist).

First edition of this attractive production issued as a New Year's greeting for friends of the publisher. In addition to the 5 portraits of the Nobel Prize winners, there is a brief biography of the artist and his work that is written in the 5 languages of the Nobel Prize winners i.e., Czech, Russian, English, German and French. Max Svabinsky (1873 1962), was a Czech artist known for his mosaics for the National Monument on Zizkov Hill, stained glass windows in St. Vitus's Cathedral in Prague, his allegorical paintings, and more. He chose these particular men for portraits because he felt that in them "the desire to help mankind, to elevate man, and to give life a higher meaning and a clear, humanistic aim has found its most dynamic expression." Covers slightly darkened but interior still quite fine.
