CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Powelson served as First Sergeant and orderly of the company for over two years under the direction of Lt. Aleck Sweeney, later Brevet Captain of the company. Powelson was also promoted to Lt. and served in company G of the 41st regiment of US Colored Infantry. This rather scarce book was prepared for a larger history that was called for at the 1903 reunion, but had not been completed. The company, in fear that its history would be lost, concluded to publish a book for itself, and to give a copy of this book to the regiment, "whenever the Book of History, as first proposed, can be issued" (preface). A more comprehensive regimental history was in fact published in 1912 (Robert L. Stewart, History of the One Hundred and Fortieth regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers). Company K was recruited from Washington County, Pennsylvania and the 140th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry served in the Eastern Theater in the Army of the Potomac. Recruited in late 1862, it fought from the Battle of Chancellorsville through the war until the Army of Northern Virginia's surrender at Appomattox Court House. Its losses during the war were among the highest of any Union regiment and its percentage of dead was the highest of any Pennsylvania regiment. The 140th Pennsylvania is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. This book provides a general history of the regiment but is more specific to the company and events specific to and the personnel of Company K; and with bio sketches of those who died since the end of the war and those still surviving.
