Book
Soft cover. Condition: VG. 11pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 11 drawings including numerous portraits, and several text decorations, salvaged from a damaged issue of Century Magazine, Volume XXIV, No. 4, August, 1882. From the opening paragraph, "The Zuni Indians, of New Mexico and Arizona, are now a mere handful of people, but in their keeping is a wonderful history, which perpetuates an ancient cultus related to that of the Toltecs, the Aztecs, and the Incas. Mr. Frank H. Cushing, of the Smithsonian Institution, who by living among them has made a great gain for ethnological learning, will contribute to this magazine an account of his unique experiences. Our present purpose is to give an account of a remarkable pilgrimage of a number of the chief men of Zuni to 'The Ocean of Sunrise.' For many years, it had been the dream of some of these men to visit the East, which was to them a land of fable." Illustrations include several scenes of the Zuni gathered for story and song, the reception at Wellesley College, a scene of burying the sacred plume-sticks in the ocean, portraits of Frank H. Cushing, whose title My Adventures In Zuni, would appear in the pages of The Century Magazine in 1882 / 1883, Senior Priest Nai-Iu-Tchi, Lai-Iu-Ah-Tsai-La, or Pedro Pino, who was Governor of Zuni for thirty years, Ki-A-Si, who was Junior Priest, Pa-Lo-Wah-Ti-Wa, who was current Governor of Zuni, or Head Political Chief, Lai-Iu-Ah-Tsai-Lun-K'ia, who was Priest of the Temple, and Na-Na-He, or Cornflower; also includes multiple Zuni symbols -- Zuni autographs -- of Cushing and various of the other native men. This article would be included in Cushing's extended, multi-part article, My Adventures In Zuni, when it was printed in book-form in 1941 by the Peripatetic Press, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Housed in protective mylar report cover.
