Leida 1672) fu un naturalista e medico olandese, "He was an expositor, rather than an investigator, of science; but even as teacher, and there were none greater in his time, he was wonderfully fertile in original ideas." (Garrison, 261-262), riconobbe infatti per primo il significato dei tubercoli della tisi polmonare e col suo nome si ricordano ancora l'acquedotto cerebrale (acquedotto di Silvio) e la scissura principale dell'emisfero cerebrale (scissura di Silvio). Daniel was the son of the family's most celebrated book printer, Bonaventura Elzivir (1583-1652). Daniel left the family business and set up his own publishing house in 1638 with his cousin Louis. It is during that time, and in collaboration with German publisher Abraham Wolfgang, when this volume was published.

Later edition of Sylvius? most important works in which he explained that digestion is a result of the chemical reactions of acids and bases coming from pancreatic, stomach, and saliva secretions Franciscus Sylvius (1614 ? 1672) was a Dutch physician, chemist, physiologist and anatomist) who was an early champion of Descartes', Van Helmont's and William Harvey's work and theories. He was one of the earliest defenders of the theory of circulation of the blood in the Netherlands ?In 1658, after extended negotiations, Sylvius was persuaded to accept appointment as professor of medicine at Leiden at the high salary of 1,800 guilders?almost twice the usual amount. On 17 September 1658 he delivered his inaugural oration, on the knowledge of man, De hominis cognitione. Although as a rule bedside teaching was limited to two days a week, Sylvius received permission to take his students daily to the hospital, where he performed the autopsies himself. His own ideas on several medical subjects were defended by his students in public disputations, and in 1669?1670 he was vicechancellor of the university. The first volume of his main work, Praxeos medicae ida nova, was published the following year, but he did not live to see the second volume in print.? (DSB) Garrison & Morton 2197.

Sylvius was an early supporter of William Harvey's theory of the circulation of the blood and the founder of the Iatrochemical School of Medicine, which explained and based the treatment of disease on chemical action. The Dutch physician, scientist, and professor at the University of Leyden "was the first to distinguish between two kinds of glands: conglomerate (made up of a number of smaller units, the excretory ducts of which combine to form ducts of progressively higher order) and conglobate (forming a rounded mass, or clump). He also discovered (1641) the deep cleft (Sylvian fissure) separating the temporal (lower), frontal, and parietal (top rear) lobes of the brain." (Encycl. Britan.) "Tuberculosis was known to the ancients only in its advanced form, and little progress was made in the knowledge of the condition until the time of Sylvius. He asserted that tubercles are often to be found in the lung and that they softened and suppurated to form cavities." Pergamino de la época con título rotulado en el lomo. La portada sufre ligerísimas perdidas de papel en las esquinas (por su uso), pero en general muy buen estado de conservación.
