Full-Leather. Condition: VG+. Illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson (illustrator). Mixed. A mixed state --as is customary-- of William Combe's epic poem, complete in 3 volumes. Uniformly bound in a handsome, contemporary full leather, with lovely gilt-bordering at the panels and fine-tooled gilt-decorations within the compartments. Vol. I ("The First Tour of Dr. Syntax: In Search of the Picturesque") is the stated 9th edition; Vol. II ("The Second Tour of Dr. Syntax: In Search of Consolation") is a stated 3rd edition; and Vol. III ("The Third Tour of Dr. Syntax: In Search of a Wife") is the 1821 1st edition. All 3 volumes are clean and solid . The Thomas Rowlandson hand-colored plates ar all present. Two have some circular discoloration at the edge, but the rest are clean and very presentable. A full page handwritten ownership signature dated 1823 is at the front of the third volume and it is presumably when the volumes were all bound. An impressive, well-preserved example of the 3 volume set. Extra Postage.

Originally issued in serial parts in Ackermann's, The Poetical Magazine in 1809 and on completion in book form in 1812; this copy has wide text margins as issued. The character of Dr Syntax, a satire on William Gilpin, a proponent of the concept of the picturesque in his writings, at once became immensely popular, with the public demanding more. Doctor Syntax in Search of the Picturesque is a story in verse of a travelling schoolmaster and was originally entitled The Schoolmaster's Tour and later The First Tour, or Tour to the Lakes. The work was reprinted a number of times during the following decades. The first two editions were so popular that the plates had become very worn.
