Rosin Collection. In the West the tradition of collecting Japanese art originated at the end of the 19th century, when great, and now celebrated, personalities such as Gonse, Weber, Naunton, Hawkshaw, Bing, Church, and Mosle were active. Subsequently, when most of these collections had been dispersed, new collectors began to assemble what was to become the second generation of Western collections. Amongst all Japanese works of art such as netsuke and lacquer, the Japanese themselves have always given pride of place to swords and sword fittings. This is closely related to the position of the samurai in Japanese society, and the consequent importance given to their sword. Even today, swords and sword fittings are the only indigenous art form which can be examined and assessed by an independent body of experts in Japan. A certificate is issued in accordance with the rarity and quality of each piece. The fact that there have never been many genuine and high quality examples outside Japan has made the task of the collector difficult. The Henry D. Rosin Collection is a tribute to his tenacity in collecting, and his constant search for superior quality. It reflects thousands of pieces which have passed through his hands. The end result, the selection we present here today, is unique in quality, homogeneity, and provenance. Many objects in the Rosin Collection are of a standard which may never again be available." excerpt from the foreword by Patrick Syz.
