A very nice copy with only light spotting to the front wrapper. Top corner of textblock at the fore-edge is bumped with some very minor chipping to several leaves, nowhere near the…text. A remarkably nice copy this Confederate imprint. In in MacMahon navigates a well-trod path purporting to establish "that slavery was originally a universal institution of all great governments and societies" and the general degradation of those peoples who would ultimately be enslaved under the American system. Further, he argues that "[t]he North was the first and original secessionist; she rent asunder the old Union , and trampled under foot the Constitution. . . ." Uncommon in this condition. An unusual binding for a Confederate Imprint, even at this stage in the war. Gold lettering on the spine, decorated raised cords. Wear at hinges and corner, rubbing to spine and boards. Faded library numbers in white o…n the spine. Remans of small sticker on the base of the spine and bottom of back cover. Bookplate on the inside front cover from the Wallace Library in Fredericksburg, VA, stamped Discard. Remains of library card pocket on free endpaper and another on rear inside front cover. Pockets were torn out without much regard for the condition of the remaining page, but those pages survived it nevertheless. Library rubberstamp on bottom of the blank side of the front endpaper and another at the base of the title page and final blank page. 192 pages. Text block very good and tight. Binding excellent. Pages are not of the best quality paper, but they are consistent and clean. A scarce Confederate imprint, making another effort to define the terms of the conflict and solidify regional support. Dedicated to "His Excellency Jefferson Davis." As you might expect, it dwells overlong on the 'natural' 'savagery' of the 'negro' and reveals itself to be what it is before too many pages are spent.
