Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Rare. Dark blue linen covered boards with gilt lettering along the spine. This fascinating volume is 334 pages in length, and features a wealth of black-and-white, and color illustrations. Our copy is unread and is in very good condition. It is virtually brand new. Photographs are available upon request. "This is the first volume in the new series of Papers on Archaeology of the Leiden Museum of Antiquities (PALMA). The National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden) in Leiden (Netherlands) houses important collections of Egyptian, Near Eastern, classical, and Dutch archaeology. With 31 human mummies and over 70 embalmed animals, the Egyptian mummy collection in Leiden is justly famous for its range and variety. It is rather surprising, therefore, that it has never before received any proper description. This new catalogue aims at filling this lacuna by providing extensive descriptions of all mummies, with basic museological and archaeological information on their provenance, date, decorative trappings, etc. However, the major interest of the publication lies in the presentation of the results of a recent research project. Most human mummies were already investigated radiologically in 1965. Some animal mummies were scanned by computer tomography in 1981, and two occasional scans of human mummies were made in 1997 and 1998. The start of the present research project came in 1999 when a cooperation was established with the Academic Medical Centre (AMC) in Amsterdam. Since then, all human mummies have been scanned using the most modern technology. This provided a wealth of information on age and sex, embalming methods, and palaeopathology. At the same time, all animal mummies were X-rayed, allowing a proper assessment of their contents and a zoological determination of the species involved. Thus, the catalogue part of this publication obtains the character of a proper radiological atlas. It is preceded by introductory chapters on the development of the Leiden mummy collection and on the history of embalming and of mummy research, and by a presentation of the most important anthropological, pathological, and archaeological findings in the human mummies".

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book is based on a series of lectures given by an international team as part of a course on Bone Scintigraphy organized by the Boerhaave Committe for Postgraduate Medical Education (Leiden, January 1980). Bone scintigraphy and the use of radionuclide tracers in the investi gation of skeletal pathology has developed into a subject of its own. Significant advances in instrumentation, radiopharmaceuticals and data analysis has considerably widened the scope of clinical application. Beyond the important area of sensitive detection of malignant involve ment of the skeleton, major strides are being made in the investigation of benign bone disease and its metabolic aspects. The structure of this Boerhaave Course reflects this change, with considerable emphasis being given to the discussion of recent methods for tracer uptake quantitation, the discussion of inflammatory osseous disease, benign pathology in general and the investigation of metabolic bone disease. As a clinical tool, bone scintigraphy is present today in most if not all general and regional hospital institutions. It is a technique in demand by genera1 interns, surgeons, radiologists, paediatricians, oncologists and radiotherapists. New areas of application are being evaluated and to some extent consolidated. These include the difficult orthopaedic issues of bone avascularity, prosthesis loosening, infection and non-apparent fractures. A range of new techniques are available and applied to the follow-up of osteomalacia, osteoporosis, osteodystrophy and other con ditions where a more objective and even preferably a numerical approach is being explored.

Paperback. Condition: Good. First Edition. viii, 146 pages. Text in English and French. Profusely illustrated with glossy black and white reproductions of photos. "Dutch-born Kryn Taconis has left us as his legacy a body of work that stretches over thirty-five years - from 1944 to 1979. As a member of the Resistance, he cast a special light upon the grave privation of the people of Amsterdam, who were starved by the German occupiers during the winter of 1944-1945. He was later associated with the Magnum agency for ten years during which he proved himself as an independent photographer and displayed his sympathies and his humanist affinities in numerous stories from all over the world. Finally, his twenty years of association with Canadian illustrated magazines such as the Star Weekly gave him the occasion to wield great influence in establishing new standards of quality in Canadian photojournalism." - Preface. Clean and unmarked with moderate wear. Binding sound. A quality copy of this impressive work. Taconis, Kryn (illustrator).
