A little known satirical, pacifist novel tracing one family's successive encounters with American warfare, from the Civil War and Spanish American War to the First World War. Through the experiences of a man and his descendant, Taft explores the persistence of patriotic rhetoric across generations, only to show how dramatically the realities of warfare undermine it. The final generation goes to the First World War filled with patriotic conviction, but returns physically broken and psychologically disillusioned. The transformation is captured with particular force in Taft's description of the returning soldier: 'The bullet alone had not done damage. It was the rain and the mud and the disillusion that had seeped into his spirit.' His physical injuries, including rheumatism and a permanent curvature of the spine, become outward manifestations of a deeper collapse of faith. Interestingly, the book shares a subtitle with Hans Herbert Grimm's Schlump, initially published anonymously in 1928. Both books employ the same striking subtitle and feature broadly comparable rows of marching soldiers on their jackets.
