[Machida 1991, Machida City Museum]. Stiff color wrs., 4 color, 61 b.w. photos, Japanese text, compiled by M. Kono & K. Uchida, 65 prints from the set of 100, 14 x 22 cm., "NEW" copy, unused. FIRST & ONLY EDITION *** . TSUKIOKA YOSHITOSHI . . . THE FIRST AND ONLY MONOGRAPH . . . A SERIES OF 100 WARRIORS IN BATTLE . . This is the one and only work devoted to this excellent series of one hundred warriors in battle. . This nicely illustrated work shows the 65 of the 100 warriors from the series: KIDAI HYAKU SEN SO. . A highly dramatic and nationalistic portrayal of Samurai in battle. This series reflects the military virtues of Samurai and military men of the period. . Each plate has a commentary and clear modern Japanese reiteration of the text found on each print. A useful and historical source. . Valuable reference for any collector, student or museum, with a focus on 16th century battles. . *** REFERENCE: See the listing of this and all other Yoshitoshi series:.
N.p. [Tokyo ?] 1877, Yamato Shinbun]. Small color woodcut print, ca 11 x 16 cm., very good, with a trace of mica dust to the print as issued, signed and sealed "Yoshitoshi Ga," an unusual print, seldom found on the market ! R A R E ! *** *** *** . . . AN UNUSUAL COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT OF ICHIKAWA DANJURO . . Yoshitoshi was doing newspaper illustrations in the mid-1880's, as an obligation to his friends, rather than out of a financial need, since his current position was secured by good sales of his art work. . *** A lovely print showing the famous actor. His eyes are very strange which was the style to depict actors with bizarre eye pointing in different directions. Nicely done, with embossed Mon on the Kimono the technique called "gaufragge" is seldom done, with a touch of mica dust in the inks gives this print a special sparkly, but low key. The actor holds a hand scroll and has a frown ! Superb example ! This print was included in the Yamato Shimbum [newspaper]. . *** CONDITION: The print is clean, bright, with excellent registry. There is the smallest pin hole at the upper right margin, else no issues worth mention. . *** RARITY: This print is exceptionally rare, and seldom found on the market. Being a print included in the newspaper, very few survived. . *** THIS EXACT RARE PRINT ILLUSTRATED AND DISCUSSED IN SEGI: Between the years 1886 and 1888 Yoshitoshi contributed illustrations to the Yamato Shimbun [1896-1906] and a series of twenty especially fine portrait prints with title: PERSONALITIES OF RECENT TIMES [KINSEI JIMBUTSU SHI] for monthly distribution to subscribers. See Segi below who illustrates this exact print, but not in color. Liberally extracted from p.52. Please visit our website where a digital photo is posted. We also provide a scan of p.52 on our website where you can compare them. . *** SENJAFUDA: Senjafuda literally means: "a thousand shrine tags" are stickers or scraps of paper posted on the gates of shrines and Buddhist temples in Japan. The stickers bear the name of the worshipper, and can be purchased pre-printed with common names at temples and shrines throughout Japan, as well as at stationery stores and video game centres. Senjafuda were originally made from wooden slats, but have been made of paper since the Edo period. . Some famous producers of senjafuda are Hiroshige, Eisen, Kunisada and Kuniyoshi. They mainly produce senjafuda for collectors because the process of ukiyoe printing is very expensive . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: SEGI, Shinichi: YOSHITOSHI THE SPLENDID DECADENT: p.53, illustration 63, and text on p.53. * SENJAFUDA: n-wikipedia-org/wiki/Fuda . *** Color scans of this & most other items are posted to our website.

Sakada is in his battle dress, with a quiver of arrows and a very large bow in his left hand, shown in an elegant stance, sporting a moustache & chin beard. . Nicely executed, ready for framing and library display. Shogun Gallery had similar prints from the same series in their catalog DEVINE DEMENTIA: THE WOODBLOCK PRINTS OF YOSHITOSHI September 1981, items # 181-184, each priced $575-330. . [Tokyo] 1880, Funzau. A single Oban sheet size 23.5 x 35 cm. print size 21 x 32 cm., very good, strong impression, ex- cellent registry, signed & sealed in the block, good colors, without flaw. S C A R C E This historical prints shows "Minamoto no Yoriyoshi [955- 1082] striking a rock with his bow, from which a clear spring gushed forth. The stream is said to have formed the river, Kitagamigawa. The event took place during a drought n 1054 when his troops suffered greatly from thirst." See E. van den Ing et al: BEAUTY & VIOLENCE: JAPANESE PRINTS BY YOSHITOSHI 1839-1892, p.116 entry no. 5 for more details on this print & the series, as well as background information on Yoshitoshi. Minamoto is depicted in full battle Yoroi or armour, with his long bow, and a quiver of arrows. Two aids watch in astonishment as Minamoto pokes among the rocks. His beautiful armour is neatly wovern and tied, his Sae or sword sheath seems to have a host of peacock feathers decorating it. Yoshitosh was the leading exponent of reflecting the true Japanese warrior & Bushi spirit in his prints. Also il- lustrated in DIVINE DEMENTIA as item no. 75. A color scan can be sent by e-mail.
