Soft Cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: n/a. First Edition. Sixteen ethnographic case studies on tourism in China and elsewhere by Chinese and non-Chinese scholars, the result of a conference on the subject. While Yunnan is a particular focus, tourism in Guizhou, Hong Kong, and Macau are also studied. A number of pape…rs deal with ethnic tourism and conservation, and major anthropological perspectives on the study of tourism are also presented. An important aspect of China's economic development over the past two decades, tourism has had a major impact on local economies and socio-cultural development, topics insightfully pursued here. The volume makes a major contribution to the study of ethnic tourism, an activity closely intertwined with representing ethnic minorities, their interaction with the state, as well as their management of marginality, modernity, and globalization. 348 pp., illustrated, partly in colour. Size: 21 x 15 cm.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This Palgrave Pivot examines why racialism is so persistent and the challenges it poses to the functioning of democracy and the attainment of national integration. It introduces an evolutionary psychology framework, which explains human innate potential to identify with and defend ones group…, but argues that racial dislike and conflicts are provoked by racial ideologies and the politics of ethnicity. By comparing the politics of race in a number of countries, including Malaysia and the United States, this book argues that attachment to ones ethnic and religious identities does not hinder ethnic harmony. It is necessary to manage the issues of race and religion as well as promoting conviviality and cosmopolitanism for pursuing the ideal of common humanity and for maintaining a stable and meaningful democracy. This book concludes that democracy, as practiced, has some major weaknesses; as an ideal, it is still the best form of government to pursue. It introduces an evolutionary psychology framework, which explains human innate potential to identify with and defend ones group, but argues that racial dislike and conflicts are provoked by racial ideologies and the politics of ethnicity. Paperback. Condition: New. The Chinese migration to the Latin America/Caribbean region is an understudied dimension of the Asian American experience. There are three distinct periods in the history of this migration: the early colonial period (pre-19th century), when the profitable three-century trade connection between Manila a…nd Acapulco led to the first Asian migrations to Mexico and Peru; the classic migration period (19th to early twentieth centuries), marked by the coolie trade known to Chinese diaspora studies; and the renewed immigration of the late 20th century to the present. Written by specialists on the Chinese in Latin America and the Caribbean, this book tells the story of Asian migration to the Americas and contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the Chinese in this important part of the world.
