Soft cover. Condition: Fine. Before the 1960s people called the prefecture of Niigata the Backside of Japan . It was very hard to reach the Hokuetsu (Niigata) area. Being the main rice producer, the Hokuetsu area was very wealthy, but far from Edo. The book is an historical, economical and anthropological description of Snow country . The main part of the book is a compendium of mysterious folk legends of the region.  The author, an educated writer ​​named Tachibana Konron  collected the folklore in a modern way, describing it as an anthropologist or ethnographer. Hokusai was also operating at his highest level during that period. He expresses scenes freely, using abstract patterns in an impressionistic way, especially for atmospheric phenomena. All in woodblock technique.   Original Japanese fukuro toji binding, paper wrapper with original title slips. Minor wear on the wrapper. Chipping on the title slip. 19th century ex-owner s inscription at the back wrappers. Owner s stamps on the last page of each volume. Very minor wormholes on volume 3. This is an early printing of the 11th volume of the classic monumental work by Hokusai (1760-1849) originally issued in 15 volumes between 1812-1878. The large range of content depicted in this volume includes evocative and engaging images ranging from artists, animals, mythical beasts, sumo wrestlers, farmers, domestic scenes, landscapes, and weaponry (including firearms). All images beautifully printed in b/w and hues of light pink. The introduction to this volume is by Ryutei Tanehiko (1783-1842), the acclaimed playwright, many of whose works were originally illustrated by Hokusai. Text In Japanese. Wrappers with rubbing to extremities, and with some small closed tears. Interior with some water staining and some worming throughout. Wrappers and interior in good- to good condition overall.

Japanese woodblock pirnted novel ILLUSTRATED IN B&W AND COLOR BY UTAGAWA KUNISADA, 14 installments in 29 parts, each 7 x 4.5, string-tied wraps, approx 10 leaves each, overall wear and toning but most illustr still sharp (though some of the color illustr are faded and/or soiled), in folding silver over boards case with two "ivory" closers. Well illustr in b&w, but each installment part has a FULL PAGE COLOR ILLUSTR BY KUNISADA-- FORMING A DYPTIC FOR EACH INSTALLMENT. Most parts have tipped-in typed label stating title, author and part number. Kunisada is also known as Toyokuni III, as he was the popular follower of the great Toyokuni. Another MS note included indicates that this was published by Kichizo Tsutaya, and written by Santei Shumma and Yanagitei Tenehiko. An incredible and rare display of masterly Japanese woodcut illustration in its original state.

By the mid-19th-Century he was virtually a household name, and yet despite his celebrity and wide circulation of this many different productions, all are quite scarce, and even individual parts such as this tend to be uncommon. The splendid woodcuts were designed by Utagawa Kunisada II (1823-1880), who took the name Kunisada II in 1850-51 after marrying Kunisada's daughter, and focused on actors, portraits of beautiful geishas, along with erotica, but his popularity waned in the Meiji period.
