An unusual insight into the attempted regulation of medical fees in Turin at the end of the nineteenth century. A suggested tariff for the services of physicians, surgeons, phlebotomists, midwives and veterinarians was first compiled by the Consiglio Superiore di Sanità in 1852. The preface notes, however, that in the intervening period the prices of many necessities have more than doubled, in line with an increased general prosperity throughout all levels of society. It was deemed only fair therefore, and indeed necessary, that professional medical fees should be increased. In no way a legal document, the present tariff is merely a guideline, showing an average of what one might expect to pay. An extensive list of common medical consultations and procedures then follows. Also of interest is the Obstetrical Calendar that is included from pp. 24 onwards. Compiled by Professor Domenico of the Turin Obstetrical Clinic, the year long calendar gives two columns for each month showing the date of last menstruation and corresponding expected date of delivery. Editorial composed in the wake of the repeal of the 1842 tariff and the substitution of the 1846 tariff, which the author argues has crippled the finer manufactories and precluded further development. Young additionally provides a comprehensive examination of the advantages of English mill owners over American due to easy and cheap availability of capital, including several figures for the Lowell and Lawrence mills. Regency edict passed during the minority of Louis xv restricting the importation of foreign produced wool and silk bonnets and other draperies from the Low Countries to the sea ports of Calais and St Valery-sur-Somme in accordance with tariffs introduced on 18 April 1667 on pain of confiscation of the merchandize if brought into France by road.

First edition of the revised import and export tariffs applied in the Papal States and the city of Rome, following legislation issued under Fabrizio Ruffo (1744-1827), treasurer-general in 1788/89. The tax on commodities is divided into separate categories, direct tariffs collected by the Exchequer, customs, special taxes and tariffs due to other public accounts, and local taxes. The extensive taxation tables give a fascinating insight into the great variety of merchandise, produced in Rome and the Papal States, or imported and exported. The categories covered in the three separate tax rate tables are first all manner of crystal and glassware, ranging from drinking glasses, to bottles, Bohemian crystal, crystal lamps etc. to Venetian coloured glass, and German glass mirrors. The second list covers animal skins, ranging from calf, goat, horse, deer skins, and many other tanned or otherwise treated forms of leather. The third one covers foreign pottery, from coffee pots to plates, both plain and decorated.
