St. George's (originally Diman's School for Small Boys or Mr. Diman's School for Boys) was founded in 1896 by Episcopal minister John Diman. The school initially leased temporary grounds in Newport, but moved across the bay to a permanent campus in Middletown in 1901. The school was initially set up as a for-profit corporation, but became a non-profit corporation in 1903. The Rev. Dr. Taverner was a graduate of Colby College, Boston University School of Theology, and received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1979 from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he served as dean of chapel and professor of religion from 1968 to 1973. Retiring from the church/parish ministry in 1982, he joined the faculty of St. George's School in Newport, R.I., serving in a variety of positions over the next 20 years: associate chaplain, teacher of religion, school historian and archivist. He wrote the school's first official history. Signed by Author.

A very good association copy. [Eric Hosking OBE, Hon FRPS, FBIPP (1909-1991) was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers, "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" (Gemma Padley). He was pioneering and developed new techniques, especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology, which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously, when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales, the event which inspired the ingeneous title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird", 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist.] Size: 8vo. Inscribed By the Author. Book.
