In single slipcase (tiny scuff top corner, tiny bump top spine). 16 + 16 + 16 pp. Facsimile edition. Three volumes in one slipcase: The Gallant History of Bevis of Southampton - The Sweet and Pleasant History of Patient Grissel - A Mournful Ditty of the Death of Fair Rosamond. The editor of the series Gammer Gurton's Story Books was hired at a young age as a clerk in the office of Chelsea Hospital for disabled soldiers until 1845. In 1863 he became deputy librarian and continued in that post until he retired in 1882. The titles in this series were published in separate booklets with gaily decorated and gilded stiff-paper covers with a coloured frontispiece. The books in the series were published by Joseph Cundall and printed by Charles Whittingham. Each book has been illustrated by a different artist. (One of a set of 35 handsome facsimiles in 28 slipcases.).

Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Unpaginated. Brown cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on front. Landscape 12mo. Top quarter of spine cover missing, heel missing. Extremities bumped, boards mottled. Prize inscription to front free endpaper. Guttering of two pages have been reinforced previously with Sellotape which has darkened and now crumbled leaving one of the pages loose. Loss to margin at top of page facing page 7 with the plate of head of collie dog - the plate is unaffected. All plates are present and in good condition.

VOLUME IN 16°, pp. (XII)-227.THE NOTEL AND ILLUSTRATIONS BY W.HENRY WILLS. THE 12 ENGRAVINGS BY THOMPSON, FROM DESIGNS BY FREDERICK TAYLER. Condition: Good+ Sir Roger de Coverley was the name of a character in The Spectator, a daily publication published by Joseph Addison (1672-1719) in London from 1711 to 1712. Each "paper", or "number", was approximately 2,500 words long, and often featured an essay or letters on politics or the arts. They were read by many thousands of people, both in England and abroad, including many of the American Founding Fathers. An English squire of Queen Anne's reign, Sir Roger exemplified the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as lovable but somewhat ridiculous ('rather beloved than esteemed' - Spectator no. 2), making his Tory politics seem harmless but silly.
