Pencil erasure residue on fep. Three Christmas Cards from General and Mrs. Taylor (two with envelopes) laid in, The one from 1984 has brief note from Mrs. Taylor. General Maxwell Davenport "Max" Taylor (August 26, 1901 - April 19, 1987) was a senior United States Army officer and diplomat of the mid-20th century. He served with distinction in World War II, most notably as commander of the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed "The Screaming Eagles". After the war he served as the fifth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, having been appointed by President John Kennedy. In Swords and Plowshares, Taylor tells the firsthand story of a life of action, courage, strategy, and dedication. Offering candid and controversial views of such central figures as Dwight Eisenhower, John Dulles, the Kennedy's, and General Westmoreland, Taylor contrasts their varying views of the role of air power in modern warfare, and presents his own approach to the problems of winning wars and making peace. These memoirs ably illustrate why General Maxwell Taylor deserves to rank among Marshall, Eisenhower, MacArthur, and Patton as one of the great American military geniuses of our time. . During World War II, Taylor fought in Sicily and Italy before parachuting into France as head of the 101st Airborne Division on D-Day, 1944. Later he commanded the Division in the Arnhem drop in Holland and in the defense of Bastogne in the Bulge. John F. Kennedy named him chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Taylor commanded the Screaming Eagles in the Second World War, and along with Robert McNamara, was crucial in the early escalation of the Vietnam War. "Taylor achieved great notoriety from 1955 to 1959 as army chief of staff and a leading critic of national defense policy. President Dwight D. Eisenhower's New Look strategy emphasized nuclear weapons at the expense of conventional forces. Taylor sought to preserve for the army a central role through a national military program that emphasized conventional forces armed with tactical nuclear weapons. He also challenged the president's main concept by arguing that current global politics were likely to produce small, local wars where nuclear weapons were inappropriate. He lost on both issues, although he did block perhaps deeper personnel cuts and secured for the army a role in missile development. Frustrated, he retired when his term ended in June 1959 and spent his last days as a soldier and his first months as a civilian speaking out publicly against administration defense policies. He summarized his views in The Uncertain Trumpet, published in 1960. The book brought Taylor into President John F. Kennedy's inner circle of advisers" (ANB). Octavo. Original white and blue cloth, pine lettered in blue. With dust jacket. Light spotting to cloth; unclipped jacket somewhat soiled and spotted: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

Inserted is a brief note that Freese "went over illustrations with the General and the General suggested certain corrections. Also inserted are the recipient's bookplate, the publisher's card, and a brief note from the author. Taylor was commander of the 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles") in the Second World War, served as chief of staff of the army from 1955 to 1959, and played a major role in the escalation of the Vietnam War in the 1960s.
