Softcover. x, 297 p.; 21.5 cm. Author's literal translation of the Gospel of John, ascribing sources, p. 166-248. -- Not in Chamberlin. `The Gospel of John consists of four main literary strands, in addition to the Christian Gnostic Hymn used by the editor in the Prologue, a possible post-resurrection stories source or sources in chapter 20, the post-resurrection stories source or sources used by the redactor in chapter 21, and occasional scribal glosses made later by copyists. The main strands are two written sources, the work of the editor who interwove and expanded the sources, and the writing of the redactor who made insertions and added more material at the end. The "unity" of style and thought which has been claimed for the gospel results from two factors: first, the work of all four writers [S: narrative "signs" document, G: semi-gnostic source "expounding a Christian theology of Hellenistic mysticism", E: the editor, R: the redactor] is scattered throughout the book, and second, both the editor and the redactor made modest attempts to unify the diverse material.' (p. [142]) -- The core of the Prologue in chapter 1 is a Jewish poem (verses 1, 3a-b, 4-5, 11) interpolated with a Christian gnostic hymn, with additions by E (p. 134) -- A survey of the history of Johannine criticism and close grammatical studies undergird these conclusions. VG in olive wrapper, edges sl. spotted. Printed from typescript.
