Berichte aus Mexiko. - Einziger Bericht des österreichischen Admirals Wilhelm von Tegetthoff (1827-1871) von seiner Reise nach Suakin, Massaua und der Somali-Küste. Tegetthoffs Aufzeichnungen fanden sich in seiner Privatcorrespondenz, die hier von Beer herausgegeben wurden. 1857 erhielt Tegetthoff den Auftrag die Küsten des Roten Meeres und des Golfes von Aden zu erforschen. Er sollte in Hinsicht auf den geplanten Suezkanal Informationen für den Welthandel gewinnen und die Möglichkeiten prüfen, in jenen Gebieten einen Stützpunkt für eine österreichische Deportationskolonie zu gründen (österr. Kolonien?). In Khartum traf er mit Theodor von Heuglin zusammen und sie reisten zusammen nach Massaua (heutiges Eritrea), wo sie mehrere Ausflüge unternahmen. Ihre geheime Mission wurde jedoch von Arabern, Türken und Briten erkannt und sie hatten immer wieder Schwierigkeiten bei ihrer Versorgung. Daher fuhren sie weiter, erforschten die Dahlak-Inseln, entlang der Danakil- und der Somali-Küste über Zeila nach Berbera (Somalia). Dort wurden sie überfallen, Heuglin wurde verletzt und nur durch eine hohe Lösegeldforderung wurden Tegetthoff und Heuglin freigelassen. Dieser Zwischenfall wird nur in diesem vorliegenden Bericht geschildert, einige Reisenotizen veröffentlichte Heuglin in Petermanns Mitteilungen. Am Hals verletzt, kehrte Heuglin um und Tegetthoff kartierte die Küsten von Sokotra (heute Jemen).
