Book Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Drew, Dick (illustrator). DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY, Bernardo Teixeira, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, probable first edition, inscribed and signed by the author, illustrated with drawings by Dick Drew, 1971. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and drawings are in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. Minor foxing along top edge. No signature or bookplate of a prior owner, but an inscription to Liz Carpenter [Lady Bird Johnson?s press secretary, 1963-1969] signed by the author [see image] was written on a separate card, which was once tipped in on the first free end page, but is now loose, leaving behind the glue residue on that page. Not a library book or remainder. The red cloth boards are in near fine condition (lightly bumped spine). Dust jacket is in fair condition (would be very good but for tears along one of the folds). 8 x 5 ½, 127 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] The world of foreign diplomacy is fiendishly exposed by Bernardo Teixeira in this hilarious portrait of Washington's embassy row. With the ease of a fishmonger fileting a flounder, Teixeira lays bare the quivering irrelevancies of diplomatic posture and the diplomatic incompetence underneath. Like a tennis match, Teixeira scores the bouts between the embassy and the foreign office in the homeland as they constantly strive to out-do each other with prestige, international importance, and rank. The author captures the frustrations of Ambassador Blenda and his staff at the Valandian embassy when they have to deal with issues over which they have little knowledge and no control; when they must give two "Significant Dinner Parties" a month to which at least one senator, one congressman, one cabinet member and one newspaper reporter must always be invited; and as they develop the ability to write a 30-minute speech saying absolutely nothing that anybody will remember or use against them. Illustrated by the cartoons of Dick Drew, this spoof portrays diplomacy as a clever little game in which the players, no matter how hard they try to take themselves seriously, are just as confused (and often amused) as the outside observers. XX Satirist and sometime diplomat Bernardo Teixeira is presently the press advisor to a foreign embassy in Washington. He has been a Hollywood screenplay writer, a radio script writer, and press officer and adviser to a delegation at the General Assembly of the United Nations. Mr. Teixeira has lived all over Europe and has travelled extensively in Africa. He is also the author of Antonio and The Fabric of Terror. Inscribed by Author(s).
