Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. This is a first edition of Tyrwhitt of the Harwich Force: The Life of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Reginald Tyrwhitt, written in 1973 by the English historian Albert Temple Patterson. This is known as the most comprehensive biography of one of the better WWI British…commanders: Commodore Sir Reginald Yorke Tyrwhitt (1870 - 1951). As commander of the famed Harwich Force, Tyrwhitt led a supporting naval force of 31 destroyers and two cruisers at the 1914 Battle of Heligoland Bight, in which the 1st Battle cruiser Squadron sank three German cruisers and one German destroyer. Tyrwhitt also led the British naval forces during the Cuxhaven Raid in December 1914, when British seaplanes destroyed German Zeppelin airships, and at the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915. After the war, Tyrwhitt went on to be Senior Naval Officer, Gibraltar, Commander of the 3rd Light Cruiser Squadron in the Mediterranean Fleet and then Commander-in-Chief, Coast of Scotland. He also served as Commander-in-Chief, China during a period of disturbances and tension with the Nationalist Government. This copy is 336 pages, including photos. Someone meticulously glued the dust jacket to the cover. Excellent condition.

Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket complete. Blue cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. Slight indentation to front. No ownership inscription. 25 Illustrations, 1 Map. 175 pages clean and tight. A constant awareness of the historical background gives Professor… Temple Patterson's account of Hampshire an originality and depth not common to the general run of topographical books. From a number of points of view, the county is an exceptionally rich one. Of its kind, Winchester is for many people the finest town in England; to fishermen, trout streams such as the I tchen and the Test are without equal; the great ports of Southampton and Portsmouth are distinguished alike in their past and in their present; to yachtsmen, the Hamble river and, of course, Cowes are in their different ways unique; castles such as Carisbrooke and Portchester, country houses like The Vyne, Farringford, Breamore and Broadlands, the remains of antiquity at Silchester, Danebury and Brading: all these add much to Hampshire's very individual quality. And to mention only these names is to omit two of the County's most characteristic features: the Isle of Wight and the New Forest. Since Professor Patterson's approach is so closely wedded to history, he is everywhere concerned with the County's great men and women: Jane Austen at Chawton, Gilbert White at Selborne, William Cobbett at Hurstbourne Tarrant, not to mention such'royalties as Alfred the Great, the Empress Eugenie and Queen Victoria, churchmen from William of Wykeham toJohn Keble, admirals as numerous as they are distinguished, and an altogether remarkable roll of writers and scientists. An exceptional county demands an exceptional chronicler. Here Temple Patterson (formerly Professor of Regional History at Southampton University) and his subject happily combine. Size: 8vo. 25 Illustrations, 1 Map (illustrator).
