Abraham Lincoln supported the Illinois & Michigan Canal, first as a legislator and later as President, advocating for national funding to complete it. His return from Congress in 1848 coincided with the canal's completion and the incident that inspired his invention, a device for lifting boats over shoals. This invention, patented on May 22, 1849, was inspired by a childhood incident and a grounding while he was a congressman, but his law partner deemed it impractical. Connections to the Illinois & Michigan Canal Early support: As an Illinois state legislator, Lincoln voted to fund the I&M Canal and later became a lobbyist for its construction. Advocacy: He consistently supported the canal, arguing that its benefits, like lowering shipping costs, extended to the entire nation, not just Illinois. White House years: He continued to advocate for the canal and other national infrastructure improvements throughout his presidency. Return from Congress in 1848 Canal completion: The I&M Canal was completed in 1848, and Lincoln publicly announced its opening and the benefits it offered to trade. Inspiration for invention: While a congressman, he experienced another boat grounding incident, which prompted him to renew his efforts on a solution for river navigation. Patent: He filed for a patent on March 10, 1849, for his invention to lift boats over shoals, and received it on May 22, 1849. His invention The device: Lincoln's invention was a mechanism with inflatable chambers on the sides of a boat that would be used to lift the vessel over shallow obstructions. Inspiration: The idea originated from his youthful experiences on flatboats getting stuck on river obstacles, a problem that recurred and motivated him to find a practical solution. Outcome: Although Lincoln was the only U.S. president to receive a patent, the device was never put into production, and his law partner considered it impractical. The only one ever built was the scale model now housed at the Smithsonian.
