Here, a crowd has gathered to celebrate the completion of the New Hungerford Market, on the Strand in London, and to watch the ascent of George Graham, in a balloon from the building's courtyard. The international aspirations of the new market are signaled by the array of flags flying from its portico. Designed by William Fowler in the Roman style, the colonnades of the upper portion, shown here, sheltered vendors selling meat, poultry, fruit, vegetables and dairy products.
