Hardcover. Condition: Good. Large format (36 x 26 cms) volume, bound in cardboard covers with an illustrated jacket in colour. Good in an incomplete jacket. A post-war collection of Bonnard's unpublished work over the previous 15 years, including landscape paintings and pastel drawings in colour and many of his characteristic nude sketches. The front panel of the jacket illustration (The Sun) is an original lithograph by Bonnard made especially for this issue of Verve. This is largely complete (just a small loss at the spine and at the bottom corner), but the remainder of the jacket is missing. The card covers are securely attached, but the backstrip is also lost. Internally the pages are clean and unmarked and the colour illustrations are bright with no trace of foxing. The French text is confined to a brief introduction and captions to the illustrations based on Bonnard's contemporary notes. Photos by Brassai. A piece of Art History at a realistic price. More photographs available on request. Please note that if ordering from abroad, any customs charge will be the responsibility of the buyer. All proceeds of sale go to LOROS, a Hospice Charity serving Leicestershire and Rutland.

Bound in cloth covered boards--the aforementioned cloth is fraying a bit, and seems ill-chosen for the work at hand, depicting, as it does, some European villa and sundry patterned flowers. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Verve was a lavish, French art and literary quarterly magazine, published in Paris, France. It was known for its high-quality reproductions of artwork and contributions from prominent artists and writers. The reproductions of artwork contained within would use techniques like heliogravure in color and black and white, as well as lithography. E. Teriade, the magazine's director, envisioned this publication would present the work of the artists and writers in the most perfect way possible. While it featured both French and English editions, this set of three issues bound in one are in English. Bound in burnt dark orange publisher's cloth, the cover bears the magazine's title, "Verve" in metallic silver at the bottom corner of the cover and along the spine. The three issues bound together in this one book are Volume 1, No. 2, March-June of 1938; Vol. 1, No. 3, October-December of 1938; and Vol. 1, No. 4, January-March, 1939. Profusely illustrated with artwork by many artists in black and white, including actual lithographs, bound in. The value in this book is completely in the lithographs themselves. FURTHER DETAIL OF CONTENTS:Spring 1938 (March-June). Volume One, Number Two. Includes all lithographs: "The Twelve Mansions of Heaven", and "The Heavenly Bodies" (Stars and Comets by Kandinsky; and The Sun and The Moon by Andre Masson). No. 3 (October-December, [1938]). Volume One, Number Three. Includes all lithographs: "The Indian Pantheon" (Birth of Vishnu; Saint at Prayer; Death of Bali; Demons of Ceylon; Planetary Divinities of Ceylon; and Playful Divinities), and "The Four Seasons" (Spring by Marc Chagall; Summer by Joan Miro; Autumn by Rattner; and Winter by Paul Klee). No. 4 (January-March, 1939). Volume One, Number Four. Includes all lithographs: "Tacuinum Sanitatis, Fourteenth Century Book of Health, Italian School, (Rye, Gourds, Sage, Veal, Clothes, Millet, Dill, New Wine); "The Dance" by Henri Matisse; and "The Garden of Allah" by Andre Derain.CONDITION: External cover shows wear and scratching, particularly along the edges. Inside, the cover of Volume One, Number Two has a 1/2 inch closed tear at the foot near the gutter. Leaves have lightly toned, yet are completely unmarked. Lithographs are bold and magnificent, all of which are present. Hinges are strong and the binding is sound. A solid copy containing three issues in one. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the size and weight of this book, an additional shipping charge may apply and will be requested after purchase. This copy will arrive with "signature required" upon delivery.
