Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: The Viking Press, 1965. (7 3/4 x 9 1/8 in., 19.5 x 23.2 cm). 78pp. First edition containing 51 beautiful gravure printed photographs found book-ended by Agee's text. Original black cloth with white titles (a clean copy in near fine condition with faint toning at edges; corners square, a few faint scuffs to cloth; else tight and internally fine and fresh). Original photographically illustrated dust jacket (clipped and faintly age toned with minimal rubbing; light creasing appears to varying degrees along all top and bottom edges; small loss to bottom of upper panel near joint with small reinforcement behind; internal repair above running 40mm from crown at same joint with associated triangulating crease to top edge.) Please see images. [Reference: Parr / Badger, "The Photobook", Vol. I, p.252; Roth, "The Book of 101 Books", pp. 178-179.] From a David Levi Straus exhibition review: "Although Levitt's work never fit the definitions of social documentary, anyone who claims these photographs are not political is operating with a severely limited sense of that term. There are times in these images when innocence comes into conflict with power, as kids are slapped or dressed down by imperious adults, caught in that politically constitutive moment when imagination collides with reality." A handsome copy of this first edition in hardcover with a dust jacket that presents very well. Inquiries welcome.
