In-8° broché sous couverture d'attente de l'époque, 25 pages et une planche hors-texte Jean-Pierre-Joseph d'Arcet (1777-1844), chimiste et fils de chimiste, vérificateur général des essais des monnaies en 1807, examinateur des alliages de la colonne Vendôme en 1811, installateur d…es bains et appareils de fumigation de l'hôpital Saint-Louis, s'adonna avec ferveur aux recherches sur la santé et l'hygiène publique, celle des travailleurs notamment. Il fut membre du Conseil d'hygiène publique et de salubrité de la ville de Paris à partir de 1810, et multiplia les essais pour limiter ce que l'on n'appelait pas encore la pollution due aux manufactures, mais qui existait déjà bel et bien. D'Arcet in fact was the first in France to manufacture true porcelain. Also, contained within this book, is the author's description of the combustibility of diamond, and an account of his classification system of minerals. (The) second Mémoire describes another long series of fusibility tests on mineral substances. Here, many semi-precious and precious stones are subjected to treatment, including agates, jaspers, alabaster, marble, jade, malachite, lapis lazuli, beryls and most especially diamond. (C. The paper by Pierre Louis Dulong and Louis Jacques Thénard Thenard appears on pp 380-387. "Dulong collaborated with Thenard on a study of catalytic phenomena. They confirmed Döbereiner's discovery that a jet of hydrogen could be kindled by allowing it to impinge in air on spongy platinum. They found that palladium, rhodium, and iridium are active at room temperature and other metals at higher temperatures.
