Binding tight and square, text clean and unmarked. 1867 Hard Cover. 210; 202 pp. Early 2-in-1 edition. The Newcomes, novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 24 installments from 1853 to 1855 under the title The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family, edited by "Arthur Pendennis, Esq.," the narrator of the story. The novel was published in book form in two volumes in 1854 - 55. A tale spanning decades in the lives of a well-to-do middle-class English family, The Newcomes is mainly concerned with Col. Thomas Newcome and his son Clive. The unheroic but attractive Clive falls in love with his cousin Ethel but instead marries Rose Mackenzie, who eventually dies in childbirth. The Colonel is ruined financially by the greedy, coldhearted Barnes Newcome, Ethel's father and head of the family. The Colonel's deathbed scene, described with deep feeling that avoids sentimentality, is one of the most famous in Victorian fiction.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. RICHARD DOYLE (illustrator). DARK BLUE-GREEN COVER WITH DESIGN FRONT AND GOLD PRINT SPINE. SLIGHT WEAR AROUND EDGES. 80 SECTIONS, 30 ILLUSTRATIONS. VERY INTERESTING DETAILED BOOK. TIGHT AND CLEAN INSIDE. The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family is a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, first published in 1854 and 1855. Perhaps one of the novel's greatest strengths is that it contains hundreds of references to the popular and educated culture of the time and thus gives a better idea than most contemporary novels of what it was like to live in England then almost a miniature education in the Victorian era. Thackeray mentions poets, painters, novelists (some of the characters are reading Oliver Twist), politics, and other people, events and things both familiar and obscure to the 21st-century reader and does so in a natural way that enhances the story. There are also plenty of Latin, French language, and even Italian language and ancient-Greek phrases all untranslated. Colonel Newcome came to be an emblem of virtue for a period, often referred to at the turn of the 20th century. William Makepeace Thackeray ( 18 July 1811 24 December 1863) was an English novelist, author and illustrator, who was born in India. He is known for his satirical works, particularly his 1848 novel Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of British society, and the 1844 novel The Luck of Barry Lyndon, which was adapted for a 1975 film by Stanley Kubrick.
