Add to basketSecond edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "Lady Elizabeth Campbell, with the best wishes of the Author, 1880", and number 15 of 50 copies. This copy features the author's heraldic badge (a fraise in a sunburst), together with his motto. Sir William Augustus Fraser (1826-1898) was the 4th Baronet of Leadclune (1826-1898). He was a captain in the Life Guards, MP for Barnstaple 1852-7, for Ludlow in 1863, and for Kidderminster 1874-80. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and one of the Royal Company of Archers, the Queen's Bodyguard for Scotland. He was also a notable expert in ancient Scottish history, palaeography, and genealogy. Cohn includes this edition in his catalogue raisonne of George Cruickshank and states there are five etchings included in the second edition. He also notes "a few extra copies appear to have been made up without the plates except for Thackeray's design on the half-title. These latter I have always found in green cloth". Cf. Albert M. Cohn, George Cruikshank, a Catalogue Raisonné, 1924, 326a. Octavo (208 x 150 mm). Illustrated half-title by W. M. Thackeray. Presentation binding by Riviere in red morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, spine and covers with repeated design of heraldic badge and motto ("Thorough"), covers with borders in gilt, turn-ins gilt, gilt edges, blue endpapers. Extremities a little bumped, some minor abrasions, some light foxing: a near-fine copy.
