Cette étude est centrée sur les plus anciens récits illustrant ce cérémonial à la cour de Savoie. Ils concernent les baptêmes d'Adrien (1522) et d'Emmanuel-Philibert (1528), tous deux fils du duc Charles II de Savoie et de Béatrice de Portugal. Particulièrement détaillés, ces textes dépeignent tous les aspects du baptême d'un enfant princier: les pièces poétiques rédigées pour l'occasion, l'ornementation de l'église et des chambres du château, la création d'une «rue artificielle» pour la procession conduisant l'enfant aux fonts, l'agencement de ce cortège, le rituel, les feux d'artifice, les banquets et les jeux clôturant la journée.
