Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Solid text blocks, light wear to corners and edges of spines. Remnants of a bookplate to the front free endpaper of each volume. Lacking one plate in Volume I, meant to be opposing Page 162. Features a frontispiece of The Witches, whose story is featured on Page 138. A limited edition of 1,250 copies, with 1,200 available for subscribers. This is copy number 499, labeled on the copyright page. The Satyricon is recognized as a "Roman novel," blending prose and poetic verses, as well as serious and comical elements. It tells the adventures of Encolpius and his companion Giton, with glimpses into what life was like for the lower classes of the Roman Empire.
