Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Assumed First Edition. 32 Pages. Developments in breech loading guns made the 9-Pdr. RML obsolete by 1890, however the exorbitant cost of the North West Rebellion led to a lack of Defense spending for the next few years and it was not until 1895 that steps were taken to re-equip the field b…atteries with 12 pounder breech loaders. This step did not mean the immediate end of the 9-Pdr. and as late as 1905 the gun was used in Dominion Artillery Association competitions to expend existing stocks of ammunition. The then new 12-Pdr., although replaced almost completely by 1912 was itself used as late as 1938 for the same reason. During its service the 9-Pdr. proved a simple, robust gun, admirably suited to the rough handling of a half trained but enthusiastic force in a rugged, little-developed country. Much of the success achieved by Canadian "Gunners" in South Africa and in World War I can be attributed to training received and the esprit developed during the period of the 9-Pdr Rifled Muzzle Loader.

Condition: New. 2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1816). SB. v + 307ppPublished Price £9.50 The author of this unusual memoir of some of the less familiar campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars, Major Francis Maule, served with the 2nd (Queenâs) Regiment in Egypt and was on the staff of the brief and disastrous Walcheren expeditio…n of 1809. His book - published in 1816, the year after Waterloo - is one of the earliest accounts by a British officer who took part in these campaigns. The Walcheren expedition was ambitious and expensive and involved landing some 40,000 British troops in Holland in an effort to support Britainâs continental allies against France. However, the expedition was decimated by disease before really coming to grips with the enemy, and was swiftly aborted. Earlier, Maule had served with the ill-fated Generals Sir John Moore and Sir Ralph Abercrombie in the campaign against the French armies that the young Napoleon had abandoned in Egypt. His book vividly describes the fighting around Alexandria, Rosetta and Cairo; the killing of the French commander, General Kleber, and the final surrender of his successor General Belliard. Mauleâs memoir concludes with descriptions of his other Mediterranean postings including Minorca, Gibraltar and the Spanish town of Ronda.

Condition: New. 2009 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1809). SB.ii+288 pp MapPublished Price £14.50 The Walcheren Expedition of 1809 was arguably the single worst disaster to befall Britain during the entire French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. Conceived by Britainâs Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh as a way of supporting… Britainâs embattled European allies against Napoleon, the expedition saw an army of 40,000 land on the inhospitable and marshy Dutch terrain around Flushing. There was fighting with the French, but the worst casualties were inflicted by disease. Dysentery and other infectious illnesses arising from the unhealthy swampland killed thousands and incapacitated many more, causing the abandonment of the inglorious expedition in circumstances resembling Gallipoli or Dunkirk more than a century later. This is an invaluable eyewitness account of the disaster.

Condition: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (original pub 1883). SB. xii + 330pp.Published Price £14.50 Military memoirs with a strong medical tinge from the former Surgeon of the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders - the famous âthin red lineâ. The thirteen years that Munro spent with the 93rd were eventful ones - encompassing the Crimean…War and the Indian Mutiny. Both conflicts get the full treatment here, including nail-biting accounts of the Battle of Balaclava and harrowing ones of the massacre at Cawnpore. Although the seeker after pure military history may be somewhat disappointed by these reminiscences, the student of human nature is left well-satisfied. Munro is more interested in life (and death) off the battlefield and behind the lines than he is in the nitty-gritty of detailed battle analysis. Much concerned - and understandably so, considering his profession - with the effects of disease, particularly cholera, on his comrades; his book is not without a touch of sentimentality, perhaps surprising in a Scottish medical man. In all, howver, these memoirs are a readable, lively and engaging portrait of mid-19th century military life.

Condition: New. 2003 N & M Press reprint (original 1845). SB. 364ppPublished Price £18 An excellent narrative of the First Afghan War by an author who was Adjutant to the 40th Regiment which took part in the capture of Kandahar, Ghuznee and Kabul under Major General Nott. The author lost his campaign journal in the Khyber Pass…to hostile Afghans, but has based this account on his letters home and his memory, and the diaries and recollections of brother officers. As well as the military events, there are descriptions of the ravages of Cholera and Small pox on the âArmy of Afghanistanâ.
