For the first time, the comparative and historical grammar of the Indo-European languages was developed on a sound basis, after the recognition of the relationship between Sanskrit, Greek and Latin. The establishment of "sound laws" was adduced to support the claim that linguistics could at last be considered a science. The historical bias of the new approach to language, together with its insistence on detailed and systematic amassing of evidence, brought it into line with other important intellectual movements of the time - notably Darwinism. The controversy surrounding Darwin's ideas could not fail to have repercussions in linguistics, and the debate which had begun in the previous century concerning the divine origin of language was finally brought to a head. At the same time, with the threatened extinction of Amerindian languages in the USA and the extension of education to the working class in Britain, the new approach to language was seen to be relvant to the linguistic politics of the English-speaking world on both sides of the Atlantic.
