Two volumes in one, containing two works by Nicholas Leonicus Thomaeus, 'De Varia Historia Libri Tres' and 'Dialogi', both published in 1532. The second edition of 'De Varia Historia Libri Tres'. A scarce work. In the original Latin. Both title pages with the printer's device, showing a gryphon carrying a box or weight, which is suspended by a winged sphere. The words 'Virtute Duce, Comite Fortuna' is printed in the printer's device. 'De Varia Historia Libri Tres' is collated, complete, with the signatures running as a-z8. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. The last leaf is blank. No collation available for 'Dialogi'. The signatures for 'Dialogi' run as a-q8, r6. 'De Varia Historia Libri Tres' is a work of history, largely concerning the history of the Mediterranean, and the bordering countries in antiquity. Discussing Sardinia, the influences of Greece, North Africa, the tribes of Numidae, the Balearic Islands, the story of the tyrant of Syracuse, and more. 'Dialogi' is Thomaeus' major philosophical work, showing his perspective that Platonic and peripatetic theories had to be mediated against the spreading Averroism philosophy. In this work are ten philosophical dialogues, much in the imitation of Plato and Cicero. They speak on a variety of subjects, including divinity and forms of premonition, as well as gastronomy and medicine. Written by Nicholas Leonicus Thomaeus, a Venetian scholar and philosopher. He was one of the first Professors of Greek descent to teach Greek in Padua. Printed by Sebastianus Gryphius. Gryphius was a German bookseller printed and humanist. He mostly published law and administration works in Gothic script, as well as Latin classics, and translated classical Greek into Latin. In a half calf binding with patterned paper to the boards. Externally, sound. Loss of leather to the spine, heavier to the tail. A little bumping to the extremities. Light rubbing to the boards, with a small amount of loss of paper. Some remains of a label to the tail of the spine. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with the odd mark. Intermittent worming to the tail of the textblock, never affecting text. Ink underlines to text to the occasional pages of 'Dialogi'. Small tidemark to the gutter of a very few pages of 'Dialogi'. Good Only. book.
