Portrait plates of each of the four speakers -- these are counted in the pagination -- ornamental bands at the beginning of each chapter (or speech), woodcut vignettes at the close of each chapter. The Catalogue makes evident… that Partridge at the time aligned with Christian publishing, and it was especially active publishing Temperance literature, among other things. The book addresses the proposition that there is nothing wrong with "moderate" drinking, an argument made by those who enjoy alcohol and don't think they should suffer for the sins of the drunkards out there. Thus it should be no surprise that the speeches herein memorialized take different approaches, but they all end up on the same side -- moderate drinking is not to be condoned. A few leaves or gatherings somewhat loose, and slightly broken hinge. Generally age toned, with occasional foxing, a few light pencil markings (which we think better to keep instead of erasing), but mostly clean otherwise. The Catalogue section is on a thinner paper, and it is foxed more heavily. Blindstamped Cloth, with gilt and black stamping also on front cover and spine (lettering, decoration, names of speakers).
