With final advertisement leaf and divisional title to volume II as called for. The first edition of this work which previously circulated in manuscript form during the sixteenth century. Thomas Caius was best known for his writings on how Oxford University had a higher claim to greater antiquity than Cambridge. He wrote a work defending Oxford when he heard a speech made in 1564 by Cambridge's orator to Queen Elizabeth. This work was then rebutted by John Caius, a Cambridge college founder. This work is a response by Thomas Caius to John Caius' original rebuttal. The original title whilst circulating in manuscript form was Examen Judicci Cantabrigiensis. From the antiquarian library of Christopher Rowe. Christopher Rowe was a schoolmaster in Norwich and then in Bristol. Throughout his career he inspired many to love literature, history and music. He was a specialist on 17th century printer and bookseller, Humphrey Moseley and began his, unfortunately unfinished, PhD dissertation on him. In full calf bindings. Externally, worn. Heavy rubbing to boards, spines and joints resulting in a small loss to the head of spine to volume I and loss to both the head and tail of spine to volume II. Gilt stamping has almost entirely rubbed off to both volumes. Prior owner's bookplate to front pastedown, Christopher Rowe. Birbeck blind stamp to title pages of both volumes. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with spots to the first and last few pages and the odd spot throughout. Good. book.
