This book was first issued in London in 1823. It featured detailed lithographs of Surrey's churches, sketched on site, accompanied by brief historical and antiquarian notes. The book reproduces Cracklow's lithographs, offering a rare visual record of Surrey's ecclesiastical architecture in the early 19th century. Each plate is accompanied by short notes on history, topography, and antiquities. Ref III 3.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Small Folio, bound in black leather with gilt decoration and embossed cover, corners a little rubbed. Five bands to spine. Marbled end papers. This is all a rebinding, but very well done. Given the original came out in 26 parts, this is all quite an achievement! Pp.600 approx. Folded engraving of St Saviour Southwark (now Southwark Cathedral) has been remounted, but well and professionally done. Short Dedication, and Preface saying the book is an accompaniment to Manning and Bray's County History. There then follow lithographs and small plans of 154 Churches (I actually counted 155) with descriptions opposite. It covers Churches from the Thames down to remotest rural Sussex and the engravings are particularly valuable for showing the churches before the restoration of many in the nineteenth century.
