That eruption was combined with a rare pyroclastic flow working like a flame-thrower of deadly gas. Equally chilling is film footage shot by American troops near Naples in March 1944 as the lava progresses, implacably, down a village street. The terrible account from antiquity, the scarcely credible moving images on YouTube are equally essential reminders of the brutal forces harboured within Vesuviu.
