Elean Roslyn Thomas (1947-2004), was a Jamaican poet, novelist, journalist and activist. She was active in the struggle for women's rights in the Caribbean and the movement for Jamaican national independence, as well as working in Latin America, Eastern and Western Europe and Africa. Sadly Elean died at the tragically young age of 56. This novel won the Ruth Hadden Memorial Award for best first novel published in Britain. Quite a scarce book.

Thomas was a Marxist journalist who was active in the struggle for women's rights in the Caribbean, Jamaican independence, and global human rights. In 1988, she married Lord Anthony Gifford, a British barrister influential in the Jamaican independence movement. The previous owner of this book has helpfully noted on the half-title page that "Elean Thomas = Lady Gifford.".
