The spine has a three inch tear along the edge of the front panel at the top and there is fraying at the top and bottom and some edge rubbing. There is a little discolouration to the front and rear panels with a little blistering to the surface of the front panel. There is quite heavy rubbing to the corners and some rubbing along the edges of the boards. There is some browning to the page edges. There is the bookplate of Anthony Edwards, Life Fellow of Gonville & Caius College and retired Professor of Biometry at the University of Cambridge, to the reverse of the front free endpaper. This book was part of his collection of Cambridge books which was a reflection of his keen and active interest in the governance of the Collegiate University. There are also some notes and a price in pencil to the same page. The front endpapers have tape along the hinge to reinforce it but there is a tear along most of the hinge between the next page and the half-title page. The front pastedown has a bookplate of an earlier owner and name, address and date in ink just below this. There is tearing to the half-title page and a little tearing at the top of the hinge at the rear endpapers. Two maps present at the front of the book. The pages have some browning but are otherwise generally clean and unmarked. No jacket. First printing.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The historian and writer Thomas Fuller (16081661) published his 11-volume Church-History of Britain in 1655, together with an appendix volume, the History of the University of Cambridge Since the Conquest. A stand-alone edition of this appendix was prepared with corrections and clarifications by Marmaduke Prickett, chaplain of Trinity College and Thomas Wright, the prolific author of books on the middle ages, and appeared in 1840. This historic account is now republished, offering detailed and lively insights into the university's origins, roots and traditions. It also provides an informed commentary, sometimes biting, sometimes fantastic, on the university's complex relationship with the church, Oxford and the town authorities of Cambridge. Anyone interested in English history from William the Conqueror to Charles I, through plague, upheavals and civil war, or in the development of university education, will enjoy this classic book. Fuller's 1655 History of the University of Cambridge was originally an appendix to a larger ecclesiastical history. This annotated and corrected edition, dating from 1840, provides entertaining insights into the origins of the university, its internal development and its external relationships during the middle ages and the reformation.
