An Original Handwritten and Signed a pre-printed attestation completed in manuscript by the Mayor and cosigner George Bridges by Thomas Goble a Lieutenant and naval signaller who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and was appointed secretary to Lord Nelson during the Battle. Dated 1820. Thomas Goble 1780-1869 was a Lieutenant and naval signaller who fought at the Battle of Trafalgar and was appointed secretary to Lord Nelson. Despite being promoted in the field at the Battle of Trafalgar to become Vice Admiral Lord Nelson's secretary, much of Thomas Goble's life story remains a mystery. He played an important role at Trafalgar. Goble served as a Master's Mate on HMS Victory and carried the slate, recording the signals sent from the flagship at Trafalgar. However, soon after the battle began, Nelson's secretary, John Scott, was killed and the 25-year-old was quickly promoted to Secretary to the Fleet. The slate was the board on which Thomas recorded all the movements of the fleet and those of the French and Spanish, as well as significant moments during the battle. Despite his promotion he carried on marking the slate throughout the fighting.' In Benjamin West's celebrated painting of the death of Nelson, Goble is portrayed looking down at the dying Admiral after he was hit by a musket ball. A rare Document Signed, 'Thos. Goble', 15 July 1820, a pre-printed attestation completed in manuscript by the Mayor and cosigner George Bridges, indicating that Goble had not worked on land or sea between 1 April and 30 June 1820, minor soiling and light creasing, small smudges to Bridges's signature and two small nicks to blank areas of lower left corner, 110 x 195 mm.
