Il s'inscrit dans le cercle éditorial des Amitiés Spirituelles, avec des auteurs comme Paul Thorin ou Paul Hubert. Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471) is now nearly universally ac…knowledged as the true author, or at least as the first editor and copyist, of this immensely popular devotional work. Kempis spent most of his long life at Mount Saint Agnes monastery, in the town of Windesheim, located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote De Imitatione Christi and numerous other devotional works for the instruction of the novices in his monastic order, Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life, but over the years they became popular among the faithful worldwide. Soon after Kempis' hand-copied versions of De Imitatione Christi initially appeared, the printing press was invented, and it was among the first books after the Bible to be printed. There is probably no other book apart from the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations. Publisher/bookseller Jean Petit I. (fl. 1492-1530) dominated the book trade in Paris, and became the official printer of its University. It has been estimated that he was responsible for financing over 1000 publications. He was succeeded by Jean Petit II (presumably his son), who was active from 1525-1543. By the Binder.

The artist dedicated this publication to his children and grand children. In the mind of the cataloguer a fortunate, albeit small and possibly futile, attempt to remedy the void created by the withering away of Christianity in Western Europe.
