Cloth Hardcover. Condition: Good/Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A very good, clean, tight copy. "The vigor and originality of Mexican culture have commanded universal respect since the conquistadors first described the Pre-Hispanic wonders they found in the New World. Except for the work of the great muralists, however, the arts in Mexico have of late been too little known to the rest of the world. "The Muse in Mexico" now offers a generous sampling of our neighbors' artistic expression at mid-century, including fiction, poetry, and drawings by some four dozen creative artists." PROLIFICALLY ILLUSTRATED in black & white photography and artists' drawings (many full page) with accompanying descriptive captions. GB12.

Softcovers. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1960. First edition - Volume III, No. 4. vi, 239pp. and many black and white illustrations from photographs and drawings by Ronald Searle. The first number of the Texas Quarterly was published in February, 1958. The periodical was designed for the general literate reader, and sought a balance among the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. Despite its name, it was not designed to pursue regional or provincial interests alone. Contributors included Sir Bernard Lovell, Robert Graves, Samuel Beckett, Allen W. Dulles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Robert Penn Warren, J. B. Priestley, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and Jorge Luis Borges. The publication also produced special numbers on Mexico, Spain, Italy, Britain, and Australia, and on the art of South America. It was available in both soft and hard covers. Paintings, drawings, engravings, and photographs by many artists, some especially commissioned by the periodical, were included. The last issue of the magazine was in 1978. The present book is a Special Issue, devoted to Britain. It is illustrated by Ronald Searle and Rowland Emett, and includes contributions by Henry Green, Ted Hughes, Philip Larkin, Sylvia Plath, and Hugh Gaitskell. The book is bound in the original card covers with black titling on the spine and black cartoons by Ronald Searle on the front and back covers. The book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the covers. The corners are curled and there is some creasing across the top front corner and both rear corners. There is a tear of about 1/2" on top rear edge that has been repaired with document repair tape. The spine is darkened with some repaired damage to about 3/4" of both spine ends. The contents are secure and clean with some bumping and curling to the corners of the first and last forty or so pages. There is no inscription. Ronald Searle (illustrator).
