Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Limited Edition. This is a photostat copy of the long out of print 1874 edition of "Manahan's Paper Trade Directory" which listed business concerns that were involved in either the manufacturing or the distribution of paper products. Thomas Manahan operated a Wholesale Paper Warehouse in New York. I do not know who photostatted the copy and had it bound - likely the person whose bookplate is is affixed to the front paste-down (Ralph M. Snell), but lacking those details I cannot say who had the photostat done, nor when . Photostats were first devised in 1909 and are still being used sporadically. A photostat was made by a camera that used a photographic silver paper instead of film. The resulting image produced was negative, ie: white text on black. Subsequent photographing would produce black text on white, which of course required more time and expenses. So a photostat was often left white on black , as the contents of this book are. Photostats were printed on only one side of the paper, leaving a verso that was blank. The paper has a tendency to curl at the edges. The directory (which is nation-wide ) is a simple listing giving the names of businesses and their addresses, divided into sections according to the type of paper business. The following types of concerns are listed : Paper Dealers - Paper Stock Dealers - Paper Manufacturers - Paper Warehouses - Dealers in Paper Stock - Manufacturers of Book and News Paper - Cane Pulp - Bank Note and Parchment Paper - Binders' Boards - Card Middles - Collar Paper - Colored Paper Hanging Paper - Hardware Paper - Leather Board - Manilla Paper - Press Board - Sheating and Roofing Papers - Straw Boards - Straw Printing Paper - Straw Wrapping Paper - Tissue Manilla Paper - Wood Paper & Wood Pulp - Bogus Manilla and Common Wrapping Papers - Writing, Flat Cap, Folio and Ledger Papers - The directory also list Mills that were Burned prior to and in 1873. There were many. This is a rare item, there seemingly being no specimens of the original Directories listed for sale on line. This photostat copy is presumed unique. This is the only specimen offered for sale online. TITLE : Manahan's Paper Trade Directory for 1874 AUTHOR / EDITOR : Thomas Manahan IMPRINT : Thomas Manahan PLACE : New York DATE : Photostat copy of 1874 Edition REPRODUCTION : Photostat - likely privately done. Decorated end-papers printed pale green and pink on gray (an Art Deco design) CONDITION -- NEAR FINE -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR -- Spine Lettering is bright; rub to edges, joints, and spine extremities; modest shelf rub to bottom edges of boards; mild surface rub; else clean and attractive with negligible signs of handling. There is a minute line of penciling on the verso of the front inner flyleaf ("Paper making and Trade Directories"). The original owner's personal bookplate is affixed to the front paste-down (Ralph.
