Contemporary calf; worn.First edition of âthe first comprehensive botany of the United Statesâ (Harvard Library Bulletin, Spring 1988). English-born Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) came to Philadelphia at the age of 22. There he met Benjamin Smith Barton, who encouraged his interest in plants. He was an indefatigable traveler and botanical collector and became a productive scholar. Hiis Genera of North American Plants was âa remarkable summary of his own explorations described with the benefit of the collections in the Philadelphia Academy, where he worked day and night on their charactersâ (J. Ewan, A Short History of the Botany of the U. S., p. 40). H. B. Humphrey in his Makers of North American Botany refers to the Genera as Nuttallâs âmasterpieceâ (p. 191). It was included in the exhibition catalogue Three Centuries of Botany in North America (Rockefeller University, 1967) as one of his âtwo foremost worksâ (the other being North American Sylva, begun by Michaux).References: American Imprints 45125; Pritzel 6772; Sabin 56347Provenance: Martha E.
