Calf rubbed, worn, hinge joints split, but boards holding. Internally, eight period or early, virtually full page notes on endpapers, or inserted within text, previous owners bookplate. Twentieth century ink stamp to front pastedown and modern bookplate to front pastedown. Corners worn but binding nice and tight. A few mainly marginal spots but generally pretty clean inside. Some black ink scribbling to upper margin of title page; a small black ink note to base. Light occasional spotting throughout. Rubbing and bumping to joints and board edges. Head and tail of spine pulled. An old number or shelf-mark laid over spine head. Very good. A magistrate and antiquarian of Leicestershire, Staveley here considers the competing claims of the Papacy, the King of England, and English Common Law in pre-Reformation England. ESTC: R12101.

Staveley was "a learned gentleman, of Cussington, Leicestershire, [who] after having completed his academical education at Peter-house, Cambridge, was admitted of the Inner Temple, July 2, 1647, and called to the bar 1654. In 1656, he married Marythe youngest daughter of JohnOnebye, Esq. of Hinckley, and steward of the records at Leicester, and succeeded his father-in-law in that office in 1672. In 1674, when the court espoused the cause of popery, and the presumptive heir to the crown openly professed himself a Catholic, Mr. Staveley displayed the enormous exactions of the court of Rome, by publishing in 1674, The Romish Horseleech" (Chalmers Biographical Dictionary).
