Published by Thomas T. Ash, No. 139, Chesnut-Street, Philadelphia. C. 1831. Included with Purchase (ALL ORIGINAL): Slip Case. 6 x 4.25", 12…mo. Rule Book. Marbled paper covers, 35 pp, 5.75 x 3.5". Map (dissected and mounted on linen [as issued], which is used as the board in this game), measuring 12.5 x 16", unfolded. Tetotum. In fair condition. Slip case is normally worn at all edges and corners. Right fore-edge's front hinge split at tail (see photo #3 [directly after video of tetotum). Left fore-edge's rear hinge split at head (see last photo). Water or tea dampness stain found on yellow title label & rear cover of slip case. Normal scuffing and soiling to slip case, but overall attractive. Marbled paper covers of rule book are lightly scuffed at edges and corners; rear cover bumped at top corner. Light toning throughout rule book; mostly at edges of leaves. Previous ownership signature, in ink, found on rule book's front paste-down: Henry Ware. Small water or tea dampness staining found on bottom edge throughout rule book's text-block. Pages 13-4 of rule book exhibit loss at fore-edge (text remains uninhibited). Light finger-soiling found on map's bottom right corner (unfolded). Water or tea dampness staining found on linen backing of map, which does not appear to have effected illustrated side of map. Tetotum spins very smoothly. Please see photos and video and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. The Traveller's Tour first appeared in 1822 (F. & R. Lockwood (1822)), making it the earliest known board game printed in the U.S. The Traveller's Tour was an imitation of earlier European geography games, a genre of educational game. These activities generally used a map for a board, and the rules involved players reciting geographic facts as they raced toward the finish. The 1822-version's map stretches from the Eastern Seaboard, to the newly incorporated states of Missouri, Maine, and Arkansas, with each town on the game numbered from 1 (Washington D.C.) to 139 (New Orleans, LA). A key below the map, provides a brief description of each town, together with the population for major conurbations. The game was played with counters and the use of a tetotem (numbered from 1-8) which was spun. Tetotems were often used at the time for children s games as dice were connected with the vice of gambling. Once the player had spun the totem and moved the required number of places, they were then required to name the town on which they had landed, and if they were playing the harder version of the game to name the town s population. THIS LISTING is for the SECOND VERSION/PRINTING of The Traveller's Tour, published, probably, in 1831 by Thomas T. Ash in Philadelphia, PA. According to extant Philadelphia city directories, Thomas T. Ash published at 139 Chestnut Street from 1828 to 1831. Page 5 of Rule Book says: "The population [of the United States] in 1830 was ascertained by census to be between 12 and 13 millions." Page 9 states: "In 1831, this town [Fayetteville, NC] was completely laid in ashes, in consequence of an accidental fire," referring to a fire that broke out on May 29th, 1831, damaging over 600 structures. Gifts were usually exchanged for New Year's rather than Christmas, therefore, this most likely was published at the end of 1831 for the gift giving season. Copyright laws were not strict, therefore, Thomas T. Ash's version of The Traveller's Tour is based on the same rules & uses a very similar "board" (map) as the New York cartography firm of F. & R. Lockwood (1822). Ash's version of the game, however, uses 101 cities, rather than 139, and the end city is Baltimore, MD rather than New Orleans, LA. There is an accompanying rule book with Ash's game, while Lockwood's included state information on the bottom edge of the map (game board). RAREA1831ERIC-2 HK2024.
