Cover rubbed. 220mm x 160mm (9" x 6"). xxix, 290pp. Translated in 1587 by Underdowne from the original Greek of Heliodorus of Emesa. The 'Æthiopian History' has been called "the ancestor in a direct line of the Novel of Adventure," notable for anticipating every artifice of the historical novel. Red/gilt hardback cloth spine over red boards.

First Thus. 1/4 vellum, dark blue cloth covered boards, gilt on black title label mounted on upper spine, top text block edge in gilt. Moderate soiling/spotting to vellum, light surface rubbing to cloth. Text block edges a bit dulled by age, flyleaves somewhat toned, interior clean and intact, with firm binding. 283 pp., with decorative head- and tail-pieces. Originally issued 1587; this edition undated and unidentified as to publisher/printer, likely 1910s-20s based on binding and typography. Scarce. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.
