It traces the arrival and settlement of the Maori people, of Cook's landing, with the welcome he received leading to him naming his ladfall Poverty Bay, still so called today. The authors then follow the history of Maori-European relationships (sometimes hostile, often uncertain,) the expansion of European settlement, agriculture and the slow pace of development, particularly communications, owing to its isolation.
